Ingredients (for 1 loaf):
-
4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
-
1¾ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
-
2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted (plus extra for greasing)
Instructions:
-
In a large bowl, mix the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy (this activates the yeast).
-
Add the flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
-
Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic (add a little extra flour if it’s too sticky).
-
Grease a clean bowl with butter. Place the dough in it, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
-
Punch down the dough to release air. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Cover again and let rise for 30–45 minutes until it reaches the top of the pan.
-
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the loaf for 25–30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
-
Remove from the pan immediately and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
